About Chikankari

GI tagged Chikankari (Urdu: چِکن کاری, Hindi: चिकन की कढ़ाई, चिकनकारी) is a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, India. Translated, the word means embroidery (using thread or wire), and it is one of Lucknow's best known textile decoration styles.

Chikankari stems from the white-on-white embroidery of Shiraz in Iran, that came to India as part of a culture of Persian nobles at the Mughal court. There is also a tale that mentions how a traveler taught chikan to a peasant in return of water to drink.

The most popular origin story credits Noor Jahan, Mughal empress and wife of Jahangir, for introducing chikankari to India.

Chikan began as a type of white-on-white (or whitework) embroidery. The different types of Chikankari embroidery that are often used are Phanda, Jaali, Tepchi, Murri, and Bakhia. To identify authentic chikankari, look for loose threads on the back of the garment, which are a result of the meticulous handwork.

Care for your sarees in 6 simple steps.
1. Avoid dry clean as it weakens the textile and chemicals make the fabric dull. Only treat stains by spot cleaning at home using a mild natural detergent or 1 cap of baby shampoo, in 1 bucket of lukewarm /cold water and dry in shade. For stubborn stains,
use equal parts water and vinegar. Use a sponge to spot clean gently. Try first in the edge of the saree. If no discoloration then proceed to spot clean.
2. Warm press (not hot) and store flat (Avoid hanging as the shape of the saree gets distorted) wrapped in a soft cotton cloth or bag. No plastics. Saree should breathe and do allow for some space between one saree and another.
3. Hang them in the open in a well ventilated area for half a day and change the folds frequently. (once in 3 months is recommended)
4. Use a fall to protect the border that touches the floor.
5. Avoid direct contact with chemicals such as perfumes and creams. 6. Be careful with safety pins on the zari borders of your saree as the sharp pin can pucture the zari and loosen the weaving.
