The early weavers of Kanchipuram were from two major communities of Andhra Pradesh, the Devangas and Saligars, who migrated to the town of Kanchipuram. They used their excellent skills to make sarees that bore the images of the sculptures and figurines found in temples, around the village.
The acclaim for GI tagged Kanchivaram sarees is purely for its special weaving technique that has mulberry silk of 18-20 denier 4 ply silk in the warp and 6 ply in the weft, twisted together with zari (a silk thread twisted with a thin silver wire and gilded with pure gold) to create sarees which are usually stronger and more lustrous that other silk sarees.
Kanchi silk sarees are known for their artisanal contrast borders, intricate designs inspired by royalty, nature and religion that is most commonly found in these striking borders.
