A showstopper saree : Green and gold with intricate meena work in navy blue handwoven Bishnupuri soft silk Baluchari sari is as exotic as a saree can be. The beautiful heritage handwoven pallu with glistening intricate silken thread work and meena work in blue and gold depicts the raas leela between Radha and Kamadhenu Krishna at Vrindavan. The pallu is an exquisite show stopper. When draped or flaunted, be prepared to receive several compliments.

A handwoven pure balucharisilk saree with intricate meenawork is indeed precious and an heirloom saree to be preserved and carried forward from one generation to the other. This saree indeed has a story to tell, volumes if we may add.  The designs mainly inspired from the Ramayana and Mahabharata,  are worn as a sign of aristocracy and status. These are indeed the choice of a connoisseur.

History of Baluchari

Originally woven in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, and today in Bishnupur, GI tagged Baluchari sarees are a rich silk saree from Bengal, characterized by intricate weaving in the pallav and borders, depicting stories from epics, historical and religious texts.

In the history of textile in Bengal, Baluchari came much after Muslin. Two hundred years ago Baluchari used to be practised in a small village called Baluchar in Murshidabad district, from where it got the name Baluchari. In the 18th century, Nawab of Bengal patronised its rich weaving tradition and brought the craft of making this sari from Dhaka to the Baluchar village in Murshidabad and encouraged the industry to flourish. After a flood in the Ganga river and the subsequent submerging of the village, the industry moved to Bishnupur village in Bankura district.

Manufacturing Baluchari sari is a time-consuming process. It requires extremely good craftsmanship and takes around two weeks to weave one saree.

The complex yet beautiful process of weaving the motifs and embroidery comes next. The raw designs are drawn on paper first and then punched back into the sarees. The colours used these days while weaving Baluchari saris are bright and cheerful. A lot of environment-friendly items are being used to weave Baluchari sarees today. Banana plant stems, bamboo trees and natural products like flower dye, fruits dye, neem leaves, turmeric leaves and dried twigs are used in the weaving process.

* This product has been woven on a handloom by the weaver and may have slight irregularities that are a natural outcome due to the human involvement in weaving a unique handcrafted product without any electrical power. The colours may fade or bleed due to the traditional dyeing method employed.

* There may be slight differences in color of the actual product due to lighting conditions during photography.
