Gayathri Border :
The border is contemporary version and has several layers. Starting from the edge, the layers are:
- 'Kadijaal', the blank space;
- Two parallel rail track like lines called 'Gaadi dadi' separated by a plain 'Kadijaal'. However zoom in to see an elaborate motif vaguely looking like 'Om' inside these 'Gaadi dadi' lines. That’s perhaps why the name Gayathri is given;
- Two more thin parallel broken lines called 'Dundu'; and
- Two sawtooth like lines facing away from each other called 'Jomaale'.
'Tope Teni Seragu':
The unique characteristics of an ilkal saree is it's 'Tope Teni Seragu' or the design of the pallu portion. Tope Teni design has been regarded as Karnataka's state symbol and is greatly respected.
The pallu is made separately and involves the joining of the body warp with the pallu warp with a series of loops. This technique is exclusively used in Ilkal and has similarities with the koorvai technique of Tamil Nadu. Preparatory work requires 2-3 artisans while the weaving process normally requires 1 person. Production can take upto 7 days on a handloom.
Saree has its own blouse fabric.
* This product has been woven on a handloom by the weaver and may have slight irregularities that are a natural outcome due to the human involvement in weaving a unique handcrafted product without any electrical power. The colours may fade or bleed due to the traditional dyeing method employed.
* There may be slight differences in color of the actual product due to lighting conditions during photography.
